Demonglass by Rachel Hawkins
Hyperion Books CH
Released March 1, 2011
This is the second book in the Hex Hall series. There may be spoilers for the previous book, so if you have not read it, I suggest you hold off on reading this post. You can read what I thought of the first book, Hex Hall, here.
Sophie Mercer thought she was a witch.
That was the whole reason she was sent to Hex Hall, a reform school for delinquent Prodigium (aka witches, shapeshifters, and fairies). But that was before she discovered the family secret, and that her hot crush, Archer Cross, is an agent for The Eye, a group bent on wiping Prodigium off the face of the earth.
Turns out, Sophie’s a demon, one of only two in the world—the other being her father. What’s worse, she has powers that threaten the lives of everyone she loves. Which is precisely why Sophie decides she must go to London for the Removal, a dangerous procedure that will destroy her powers.
But once Sophie arrives she makes a shocking discovery. Her new friends? They’re demons too. Meaning someone is raising them in secret with creepy plans to use their powers, and probably not for good. Meanwhile, The Eye is set on hunting Sophie down, and they’re using Archer to do it. But it’s not like she has feelings for him anymore. Does she?
I was so excited to finally get this book and read it since I loved the first book in the series. It was a little different from what I expected, but I was not disappointed. All the elements I initially loved from Hex Hall are still present here, including the fun writing, the great characters, and the action.
Of course I expected there to be plenty of action, especially following the events Sophie faced in Hex Hall. And in fact, it seemed like Demonglass had even more action in it. Just when you think Sophie is safe, oh no, you are mistaken. Things got more serious and crucial. New findings along the way make the story more complicated and I was on the edge of my seat for most of it. Besides the action, like the first book there were a of couple surprising twists in this plot. I really didn’t see most of them coming and usually I’m pretty good at guessing!
I like how romance is handled in this series. Even if she is a demon, Sophie is still a teenage girl so she’s interested, but she’s got some other things she needs to worry about too. That remains true here and of course after what we learned about Archer, romance is all that more complicated now. I liked the parts Archer was in, but it didn’t take up the bulk of the book and I didn’t mind that too much because I wouldn’t have liked it to have taken away from the rest of the story.
And here we are again with an even bigger cliffhanger than before. Needless to say I will snatch up the third book in this series as soon as possible.
