Books For Thought (5)

Books For Thought is a weekly meme hosted by Eleni at La Femme Readers. Each week a new question is featured for discussion. Find out more, join in on the discussion, and see Eleni's answer here.

This week's question: "If books didn't exist, what would be your other hobby?"

No books?! That is a scary, scary thought. But I guess I would be more into the other things I like. I'd see more and care more about movies and television shows, maybe concerts too. I'd own a lot more CDs and spend more time listening to my iPod for sure. Would comics still exist? I like those too. Maybe I'd even get more into video games. Or... sports?! I was the kid in the library during recess and lunch time so I'm not sure about that... Thankfully this is only a hypothetical question and not real life!

What are your bookish thoughts?

Borrowed from the library:

Matched by Ally Condie. This book has been really popular the last few months. I saw it on the display and grabbed it since I've been curious about it for a while.
Haven by Kristi Cook. I've been seeing this one around a lot lately too. I grabbed it from the same display. This one is also a 2011 Author Debut!
Shadowland by Alyson Noël. This is the third book in the Immortals series. The one I couldn't find last week. Told you I'd go back for it. Not surprising though, right?

The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan

The Forest of Hands and Teeth (The Forest of Hands and Teeth #1)

Carrie Ryan

Delacorte Press

Released March 10, 2009

In Mary's world there are simple truths. The Sisterhood always knows best. The Guardians will protect and serve. The Unconsecrated will never relent. And you must always mind the fence that surrounds the village; the fence that protects the village from the Forest of Hands and Teeth. But, slowly, Mary’s truths are failing her. She’s learning things she never wanted to know about the Sisterhood and its secrets, and the Guardians and their power, and about the Unconsecrated and their relentlessness. When the fence is breached and her world is thrown into chaos, she must choose between her village and her future—between the one she loves and the one who loves her. And she must face the truth about the Forest of Hands and Teeth. Could there be life outside a world surrounded in so much death?

GoodReads

This book has been on my to-read list for a very long time. I finally got to reading it and now I’m so happy I did. I’ve been a zombie fan for years, but the only zombie book I have read before this was The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks (which I do recommend if you like zombies too). I’ve also heard mixed reviews about this book so that made me want to read it even more and decide for myself.

Since this was the first zombie book I have read, I was really anxious to see how the zombies would be set up. And I was glad that they are not romanticized or humanized. I can deal with vampires, werewolves, witches/wizards/warlocks, and faeries to be in a story like that, but not zombies. Zombies are in a class of their own. I think that would only work if the story was meant to be comical. But thankfully this story did not take that route. This is YA horror and suspense. There is romance and a love story in it, but not the way we see it in paranormal romance stories.

I loved the writing style. It flowed well, and it was poetic without trying too hard. I enjoyed how things were phrased. I also liked the characters. Mary is the main character and the narrator and I felt like she was realistic. She was strong, but she still has her faults and flaws. I liked her love interest too. I wish I could have seen more of their relationship, but of course during a zombie apocalypse there are more important things going on at the moment!

Which brings us to the story. I loved that too. Even if you think zombies aren't your "thing", there's more to the story than just monsters. It's a unique read with a lot of great qualities any YA fan could be interested in. This book is the first in a trilogy and I can't wait to see where this story goes.

If you are a zombie fan and you have not picked this up, or if it’s sitting on your shelf unread, get to it! I am really excited to read the next book in the series, so you’ll be seeing it here soon.

This week's question: "Inspired by the inane twitter trend of #100factsaboutme, give us five BOOK RELATED silly facts about you."

1. I've been a reader my entire life. My mom has been taking me to the library when I was six months old!

2. I currently have 30 books taken out from the library, and 11 on hold.

3. I have a huge TBR pile, not including the previously mentioned library books. But I still check out more and buy more.

4. Whenever I buy a book, I look at every copy on the shelves to find the one in the best condition. If none of them are in good enough condition, I will look for another book and repeat the process. I will look for the first book at another store or another visit.

5. I will never have enough shelf space. Ever.

Happy Friday!

Book Blogger Hop (8)

The Book Blogger Hop is a weekly meme hosted by Jennifer at Crazy For Books. Each weekend a new question is posted for book bloggers to answer on their blogs. Find out more and join in on the fun at this weekend's post here.

This week's question: "If you could physically put yourself into a book or series…which one would it be and why?"

Wow this is a hard question. There are so many books where I love the world, but I don't know if I would like to actually be in it! But if I had to choose, maybe I would like to live in Mystic Falls and be friends with Elena and her friends from the Vampire Diaries by L. J. Smith.

Red Riding Hood by Sarah Blakley-Cartwright

Red Riding Hood

Sarah Blakley-Cartwright

Poppy

Released January 6, 2011

The blacksmith would marry her.
The woodcutter would run away with her.
The werewolf would turn her into one of its own.

After her sister's violent death, Valerie's world begins to spiral out of control. For generations, the Wolf has been kept at bay with a monthly sacrifice. But now no one is safe. When an expert Wolf hunter arrives, the villagers learn that the creature lives among them--it could be anyone in town.

It soon becomes clear that Valerie is the only one who can hear the voice of the creature. The Wolf says she must surrender herself before the blood moon wanes...or everyone she loves will die.

GoodReads

I’ve seen some confusion about this book so I wanted to explain some things first. The movie in theatres now is not based on this book. This book is based on the movie’s script. The script was written by David Leslie Johnson, and this book was written by Sarah Blakley-Cartwright. There is an introduction in the book by Catherine Hardwicke, who directed the movie. The introduction explains how the book came to be.

I was really excited about this movie and when I saw there was a book version too I bought it because I wanted to read it before I saw the movie. And I have to be honest. The book disappointed me a bit. I understand the purpose of the book was to enhance the story presented in the movie script, and to expand on the world and the characters. The beginning of the book was really slow and didn’t seem to really have much of a point. It just wasn’t exciting to read. It did pick up when the actual story of the movie begins, about a third in.

I didn’t love the writing either. I don’t think Sarah Blakley-Cartwright is a bad writer, but maybe she was rushed since the book came out before the movie. Some parts were really well written and interesting so I am convinced that her future works may be a lot more enjoyable, but some parts were kind of awkward to read. There was a lot of telling and not showing. And something that was changed about the love plot in the story bothered me a lot after I saw the movie. The way it is in the movie makes a lot more sense.

Some of the descriptions were great, like of the town, the people, and the surrounding woods. I liked the picture it gave me in my head for the story to take place. What I did love about this book was the story. I’ve loved the story of Little Red Riding Hood that I have heard since I was a little kid, and that’s why I was so excited to read this book and see the movie. I especially like the take this story has on the original story, making the wolf a person from the village, an actual werewolf! It’s really interesting to see a fairy tale I loved as a kid be updated to include the paranormal aspects that I love now.

The book doesn’t have an actual ending, but there is a link at the end and if you go to that webpage you can read the final chapter. I think that chapter was not available until the movie came out so I guess it was to avoid spoilers. I know there is a new edition of the book out with a photo of Amanda Seyfried (the actress who plays Valerie in the movie, she is awesome) on the cover and I think that came out after the movie, so maybe it has the last chapter already included, but I am not sure. If you see it in a bookstore and flip through it to see, make sure you don’t read any of it, just see if there’s a link at the very end.

If you read this book and don’t love it, don’t let that turn you off seeing the movie. Everyone is making Twilight comparisons and I do understand why, but it’s actually very different, in a good way. The “love triangle” is not comparable at all! Read it and/or see it to understand what I mean.

This week's question: "Which book would make a great TV Show?"

My favorite YA series is Vampire Academy, as I've said many times before. I know it's already being optioned for a movie but I have to wonder if it would work better as a series. Television series sometimes seem like they make more sense, especially for a book series since they are much longer than a movie. Less scenes will have to be cut out. How many times have you seen a movie based on a book you love and were disappointed they left out a part you had been waiting to see on the screen?

The bookmark is for the book Deadly by Julie Chibbaro. This was super exciting because this is the first blog giveaway I've won! I haven't read the book yet, but it sounds great. I had my first post all typed up and ready to go and I just needed a name for my blog. I went with "Don't Sleep, Read" because it describes me very well, and I can imagine it describes many other people in this community. This week's question: "Do people ever complain about your reading addiction?"

Luckily, no. My parents have always been happy that I'm a reader and many of my friends like to read too. They're used to it and pretty much expect it of me. My boyfriend is also supportive and he doesn't complain when I take a while looking around in the book store. And he listens when I tell him about what I'm reading and about my blog. He's not a YA fan, but he likes reading and looking at books too.

Demonglass by Rachel Hawkins

Demonglass (Hex Hall #2)

Rachel Hawkins

Hyperion Books CH

Released March 1, 2011

This is the second book in the Hex Hall series. There may be spoilers for the previous book, so if you have not read it, I suggest you hold off on reading this post. You can read what I thought of the first book, Hex Hall, here.

Sophie Mercer thought she was a witch.

That was the whole reason she was sent to Hex Hall, a reform school for delinquent Prodigium (aka witches, shapeshifters, and fairies). But that was before she discovered the family secret, and that her hot crush, Archer Cross, is an agent for The Eye, a group bent on wiping Prodigium off the face of the earth.

Turns out, Sophie’s a demon, one of only two in the world—the other being her father. What’s worse, she has powers that threaten the lives of everyone she loves. Which is precisely why Sophie decides she must go to London for the Removal, a dangerous procedure that will destroy her powers.

But once Sophie arrives she makes a shocking discovery. Her new friends? They’re demons too. Meaning someone is raising them in secret with creepy plans to use their powers, and probably not for good. Meanwhile, The Eye is set on hunting Sophie down, and they’re using Archer to do it. But it’s not like she has feelings for him anymore. Does she?

GoodReads

I was so excited to finally get this book and read it since I loved the first book in the series. It was a little different from what I expected, but I was not disappointed. All the elements I initially loved from Hex Hall are still present here, including the fun writing, the great characters, and the action.

Of course I expected there to be plenty of action, especially following the events Sophie faced in Hex Hall. And in fact, it seemed like Demonglass had even more action in it. Just when you think Sophie is safe, oh no, you are mistaken. Things got more serious and crucial. New findings along the way make the story more complicated and I was on the edge of my seat for most of it. Besides the action, like the first book there were a of couple surprising twists in this plot. I really didn’t see most of them coming and usually I’m pretty good at guessing!

I like how romance is handled in this series. Even if she is a demon, Sophie is still a teenage girl so she’s interested, but she’s got some other things she needs to worry about too. That remains true here and of course after what we learned about Archer, romance is all that more complicated now. I liked the parts Archer was in, but it didn’t take up the bulk of the book and I didn’t mind that too much because I wouldn’t have liked it to have taken away from the rest of the story.

And here we are again with an even bigger cliffhanger than before. Needless to say I will snatch up the third book in this series as soon as possible.

Hourglass by Claudia Gray. This is the third book in the Evernight series. I've only read the first book, but I loved it and I already borrowed the second book, so I'll get to them soon.

Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver. I've heard so much about this one and so when I saw it on display I had to get it to see what I think.

Vesper by Jeff Sampson. This is on my list for the 2011 Debut Author Challenge! This is another book I've heard a lot about so I've been wanting to read it because the story sounds great. This is the first book in the Deviants series.

This is the third book in the Vampire Diaries: The Return series, as well as the seventh book in the entire Vampire Diaries series.
